So interesting to hear about your experiences working away and also how that really felt on a deep level, the restrictions as well as the expansiveness of change, the shifting rules, loneliness, power and reclamation. And thanks for including my article too!

Thank you for your comment Bonnie. And you are welcome - I loved your piece about witches and I liked the link between the different stories we can share about our bodies as women.

The 2007 obsession with thinness. Ugh I feel this. Me too. I read recently that dance, specifically, has been proven to relieve the symptoms of depression. I think it topped most SSRIs in a blind study. Fascinating!

Oh how interesting about dance and depression. I love that. And yes our culture was so unhinged about body weight then. It was impossible to embrace anything but skinny.

How I yearn for a community like dance class - similar to the one you mention :/ I savored this piece, Catriona.

Thank you Sanobar - it is such a gift to anything with a community of women - dancing or creating - it always has its own special power. I miss having the freedom of this fire station space. I have never forgotten it.

Gosh I hear you! The only time I've sustained any body movement class is when it's come in the form of a community supporting group. And now that you mention it, yes...even with my writing. I guess I could only get into memoir writing thanks to a supportive community of writers. I'm glad you made memories that you still write about, Catriona :) I hope to see you someday soon!

I wish I could learn to shake my culo! I’m a massive Ricky Martin fan and he knows how to shake his 😂 I love how you connected with dance to find yourself, to be free, and I strongly believe dance, words, painting, anything creative is freeing if we can let go, let flow. I sometimes indulge in solo dance sessions, putting music on loud and letting rip. It can be very therapeutic!

Omg I forgot about Ricky Martin. He was great and really good at culo shaking. I might have to immediately look him up on youtube. Yes its true - writing and art can also offer us freedom. And there is nothing like a good kitchen dance - i need to remind myself of that more often 🙏🏻
